Between vacation, getting sick post-vacation, and the ridiculous allergies I’ve been having, my running has been a bit less consistent than I’d normally like.
While in Japan (4/11-4/21): I ran every day but one (not including travel days when I obviously was on a plane), ranging from 2.5-7.5 miles. I did manage to make it to a club run the day after I got back for a very hot and jet-lagged 10 miles. The week ending 4/15 I managed 25 miles, and the week ending 4/22 I did 32. Quite a bit less than the 50ish I’ve been aiming for per week, but with all of the walking and vacation-ing we were doing, it was all I could manage!
Monday, 4/23: 5 miles before work at an 8:16 pace.
Tuesday, 4/24: Run club! The workout was warmup, 5 x 20 sec strides, 3 x 1600m, and cooldown for a total of 7.25 miles. My 1600m intervals were: 7:03, 6:55, 6:50. I didn’t feel particularly good or strong for this workout, and afterwards I started to feel “off”.
Wednesday, 4/25: On the plan was 50-60 minutes easy. I wasn’t feeling great so I decided to run 6 mi at an easy-easy pace, 8:45-9 min/mi or so. I don’t know what happened but my splits ended up: 8:54, 8:24, 8:15, 8:10, 8:04, and 7:46. Overall pace: 8:17. I felt find during the run but crashed HARD after.
Thursday, 4/26: Officially sick. Took a total rest day instead of doing the prescribed 60 minute progression run. We also drove up to OR that evening.
Friday, 4/27: Tried running and failed miserably. Managed 3 miles of running/walking at 10:18 pace, but my heartrate was through the roof even going that slow.
Saturday, 4/28: Feeling a little better and was determined to do a long run. Before getting sick I wanted to do 15-16, but I ended up doing 12 at an 8:17 pace. Splits: 8:24, 8:20, 8:36, 8:20, 8:37, 8:05, 8:16, 8:20, 8:17, 8:16, 8:15, 7:40.
Sunday, 4/29: Started to feel even better so went out for 10 miles. Overall pace was 8:05, with the last 5 averaging 7:53 (right around goal marathon pace!)
Monday, 4/30: Easy 3 in the morning with Gibbs. Was tired, 8:54 pace.
Tuesday, 5/1: Speed work with the run club. A total of 7 miles at 8:41/mi. Here’s what we did:
- Group stride drills (“Indian Run” is the non-PC term)
- 1600m – 7:02 (800m recovery)
- 1000m – 6:52 pace (500m recovery)
- 800m – 6:32 pace (400m recovery)
- 400m – 6:24 pace (200m recovery)
- 200m – 5:04 pace
- Cool down
Wednesday, 5/2: Another easy 50-60 minutes on the plan. I was thisclose to skipping it, since all I wanted to do was go make bread from scratch and sit on the couch while eating it (yeah, I have no idea…), but I decided to not be lazy. So I ran 6 miles at 8:35 pace, then went and had a Thai food date with my lovely husband.
I’m struggling a bit to get back into the swing of things. The marathon is about 16 weeks out, and instead of getting MORE motivated I’m getting less so. My club’s coach is helping me come up with a training plan, and basically said I don’t need to really change what I’m doing or add mileage for at least a month. I think I’m also just distracted in general due to jobs, potential moves, and googling things like “how to know if you’re ready for a baby”. (Side note: internet quizzes are ridiculous, but they say things like “what are you waiting for?” If I wanted a guilt trip I’d just talk to my mom, geez!)
